Villemin Garden – Mahsa Jîna Amini

Summary

A lush urban haven honoring Mahsa Jîna Amini, blending history and community spirit.

Description

The Villemin Garden – Mahsa Jîna Amini, in Paris’s 10th arrondissement, spans 1.97 ha and was created in 1977 on the site of the former Villemin military hospital, itself housed in the old Récollets convent. In September 2023 the garden was unanimously renamed by the City Council in honor of the Iranian student whose death sparked women's rights protests.

The entrance at Rue des Récollets features the original 19th‑century hospital gate. The garden includes a gently sloping lawn, a historic music kiosk, a neo‑Baroque fountain from 1846 by Marie Auguste Martin, and scenic views over the Canal Saint‑Martin.

It provides a family-friendly environment with a children’s playground, sports courts (basketball, handball, pétanque), abundant seating, and the “Le Poireau Agile” community garden launched in 2005, home to hundreds of plant and insect species.

The atmosphere is multicultural and peaceful: early morning joggers, families, Afghan refugees—often calling it “Little Kabul”—and history enthusiasts gather together. In summer, the music kiosk hosts the “Kiosques en fête” program with free concerts, traditional dance, filmscore events, and more.

A memorial plaque commemorates Jewish children deported during WWII, lending a poignant historical dimension. During summer, the garden remains open until midnight for evening gatherings.

Audience: all ages, families, music lovers, migrant communities, history buffs, and solidarity-minded visitors.
Practical info: Metro Gare de l’Est (lines 4,5,7), buses 30–65. Opens from 7 am in summer, seasonal closure times vary from 17:45 to 20:30, with night openings in summer.
