Tuileries Garden

Summary

Stroll through Paris's oldest French-style garden, dotted with statues, fountains and family-friendly activities.

Description

Originally designed in 1564 for Catherine de’ Medici and later redesigned by André Le Nôtre, Tuileries Garden is a living masterpiece of French landscape architecture. Situated between the Louvre and the Place de la Concorde, it spans 23 ha featuring symmetrical walkways, six fountains and ponds (including an octagonal one), lawns, groves and over 3,000 iconic green chairs.

A protected historic monument since 1914 and part of a UNESCO World Heritage site, the garden has evolved from a royal court to a beloved public promenade. It has witnessed significant historical events – the burning of the palace in 1871, contemporary art installations, and the return of the Olympic cauldron since 2024.

Today, the garden offers something for everyone: open-air sculptures by Rodin, Maillol, Giacometti, Louise Bourgeois, Henry Moore, Dubuffet (over 140 statues and vases); trampolines, merry-go-rounds, rope bridges and swings .

The ambiance blends serenity and bustle: early-morning runners under the Grand Couvert, strollers around the round pond, families enjoying games, and in summer, a funfair on-site .

It is also a cultural gateway: the Jeu de Paume (photography/visual arts) and the Musée de l’Orangerie (Monet’s Water Lilies and Impressionist works). A gardener’s bookshop, refreshment kiosks and cafés (Terrasse de Pomone, Café des Marronniers, Médicis) line the walks .

Visitors range from tourists and locals to families, sports enthusiasts and art lovers. A notable moment: the first hydrogen balloon flight took off here in 1783, with Victor Hugo later recalling early aerial experiences .

Practically: open free from 7:30 to 19:30 (7:00–23:00 in summer). Accessible by metro (Concorde – lines 1,8,12; Tuileries line 1), bus, RER C (Musée d’Orsay walkway), Vélib’, with wheelchair access. Dogs not allowed .

In short, Tuileries Garden is a unique blend of greenery, art, play, relaxation and season‑long events. Its prime location makes it a must‑visit on any Paris itinerary.
