Printemps Haussmann – Iconic Luxury Department Store in Paris

Summary

A luxury department store in the heart of Paris, combining shopping, heritage and unforgettable views

Description

Founded in 1865 by Jules and Augustine Jaluzot and designed by Paul Sédille, Printemps Haussmann spans three interconnected buildings covering over 44,000 m² of retail space, now listed as a historic monument. Rebuilt after the 1881 fire, Sédille introduced decorative visible metal structures, pioneering modern department store architecture.

Inside, visitors admire Art Nouveau domes, floating staircases, glass walkways and a central skylight. René Binet’s early 20th-century renovation added balconies and greenery in the grand hall.

Today Printemps is organized into:

Printemps de la Femme (9 floors)

Printemps Beauty – Home – Kids (7 levels)

Printemps de l’Homme (11 floors).

Over 3,000 brands are featured, with 35% exclusive or second‑hand fashion offerings in the Sixth Heaven / Second Printemps space. At Christmas, animated window displays attract over ten million visitors with choreographed light and sound shows along boulevard Haussmann.

Visitors can enjoy hands‑free shopping, tax‑free service (12% for non‑EU residents), delivery, click‑and‑collect, hot-stamping, lost‑and‑found, watchmaker and currency services, personal shopping, historical tours with Cultival, and a rooftop terrace with panoramic views over Opera, Eiffel Tower, Montmartre.

The atmosphere blends heritage elegance with contemporary innovation. The department store now targets discerning local shoppers while maintaining international appeal. Its personal shoppers, wide aisles and comfortable corners ensure a refined experience.

Target audience: luxury fashion lovers, design and heritage enthusiasts, visitors seeking an immersive experience, locals desiring bespoke services.

Fun fact: the 1881 fire prompted a complete architectural overhaul that gave Printemps its signature metallic look. The annual Christmas windows are created by star decorators to dazzle boulevard Haussmann visitors.

Visitor info: open Mon–Sat 10:00–20:30, Sun 11:00–20:00, metro lines 3 & 9, RER A at Auber, RER E at Haussmann‑Saint‑Lazare.
