Maubuisson Abbey

Summary

Maubuisson Abbey is a 13th-century royal Cistercian abbey located in Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône, now transformed into a contemporary art and historical exhibition center.

Description

Founded in 1236 by Blanche of Castile, the mother of King Louis IX (Saint Louis), Maubuisson Abbey is one of the best-preserved medieval sites in the Val-d’Oise. Nestled along the banks of the Oise river, it served as a royal necropolis and spiritual retreat for noblewomen for centuries.

Today, the abbey is a rare blend of history and modern creativity. The gothic architecture has been preserved, including vaulted naves, monastic gardens, and medieval water systems. However, the site has embraced a new life as a contemporary art venue, hosting rotating exhibitions, installations, and performances.

Anecdote: Queen Blanche herself spent time at the abbey and died there in 1252. Her influence shaped the architectural and spiritual legacy of the place.

The entrance is free all year round, and guided tours are available. It’s a perfect cultural stop for families, history lovers, or contemporary art fans visiting the Saint-Ouen-l’Aumône area.
