Paris Mint – Museum of Metal Arts

Summary

A sensory, immersive temple of metal and craftsmanship.

Description

The Paris Mint, located in the majestic 1775 neoclassical building on Quai de Conti, is France’s oldest still-operating mint. Since 2017, it has housed an interactive museum spanning 1,200 m², showcasing nearly 1,800 objects – from ancient coins and medals to historic machinery and hidden treasures.

The visitor trail, designed with universal access in mind, engages all the senses: touching metals, hearing the ring of strikes, smelling the foundry, viewing live engraving demos. With the Numiscope augmented reality system, you unravel the mysteries of iconic coins. Engraving demonstrations are held regularly, connecting visitors directly to craftsmanship.

This venue serves simultaneously as a working mint, royal palace, living museum, and cultural site: you witness metal extraction, casting, cutting, engraving, chasing, enamelling, and gilding, guided by skilled artisans. The journey weaves together art, science, economics, history, and sociology. Families, school groups, historians, and coin enthusiasts will all find something to treasure.

Permanent activities include guided tours, creative workshops, and Wednesday evening visits until 9 pm, alongside a dynamic cultural program with rotating exhibitions. It’s ideal for families, friends, or solo visitors seeking a vivid metal experience.

A contemporary lounge welcomes guests on the ground floor, complemented by a café (Café Frappé by Bloom) and a shop set in the former foundry – all in an art gallery style.

Access is easy via metro (Pont‑Neuf, Odéon, Saint‑Michel), bus, RER, Vélib or Batobus. Several public parking options and wheelchair access are available.
