Parc de Belleville

Summary

A terraced green oasis atop the hill, offering breathtaking views, vineyard, waterfall, play areas, and cultural features.

Description

Perched atop Belleville Hill, this 4.5 ha urban park was inaugurated in 1988 by architect François Debulois and landscaper Paul Brichet. It contrasts terraced greenery, a 100 m waterfall, and a nearly 30 m-high belvedere offering breathtaking views over Paris. A vineyard planted with Pinot Meunier and Chardonnay vines celebrates the hill’s winemaking past.

Terraces echo the historical water springs, channeled into a cascading cascade and aquatic garden. Floral beds, the result of horticultural competitions, line shaded paths among 1 200 trees and shrubs, including rare species. A spacious 1 000 m² lawn invites open-air picnics—a rare find in Paris.

Families enjoy wooden play structures, ping‑pong tables, and open-air theater. At the summit, the “Maison de l’Air” educates visitors about environmental issues, complemented by cultural events year-round.

Historically, Belleville Hill was a winemaking site since Carolingian times. The guinguet wine fueled local cabarets. Harvests resumed in 1993, producing a small local rosé, enjoyed during the annual harvest festival but not sold commercially. The park has won horticultural and regional wine awards.

The atmosphere is peaceful, bucolic, and diverse—families, locals, photographers, and tourists seeking a sunset spot without Montmartre crowds. It evokes a village spirit, enriched with street art and historical references like the famous Rue Vilin and the Carnival of Courtille.

Clientele includes families, photographers, neighborhood residents, sightseers, botany lovers, and curious wine enthusiasts. Anecdotes: Rue Vilin was captured by Willy Ronis and Robert Doisneau; the park appears in films such as Le Ballon Rouge and Klapisch’s Paris.
