National Museum of Immigration History – Palais de la Porte Dorée

Summary

Dive into two centuries of human and cultural stories within an Art Deco gem, reimagined to celebrate immigration in France

Description

Since its opening in 2007 and formal inauguration in 2014, the National Museum of Immigration History, housed in the magnificent 1931 Art Deco Palais de la Porte Dorée, offers an immersive journey through two centuries of immigration in France. The permanent exhibition, revamped and expanded in 2023, revolves around eleven key dates—from the 1685 Edict to contemporary times—blending history, anthropology, contemporary art, and personal testimonies.

Visitors explore legal frameworks, international movements, and immigrant contributions to culture and sports through photos, daily objects, documents, and artworks. The atmosphere is both educational and emotional, with mediators often present on weekends. Temporary exhibitions such as Banlieues chéries (April–August 2025) and off-site programs extend the museum’s engagement.

The former colonial museum palace becomes a powerful symbol: a tapestry of histories prompting reflection. The adjoining Tropical Aquarium, a legacy of 1931, offers a vibrant contrast: an underwater journey through 500 tropical species under a combined ticket. In summer, the Poisson Lune terrace adds a lively outdoor setting.

The museum attracts a wide audience: history enthusiasts, families (children’s workshops, youth audio guides), school groups, researchers, and cultural tourists. Accessibility is comprehensive: ramps, elevators, hearing loops, LSF/LPC tours.

Practical info: open Tuesday–Friday (10 AM–5:30 PM), Saturday–Sunday (10 AM–7 PM); closed Mondays & public holidays (Jan 1, May 1, Dec 25). Online booking recommended; joint museum + aquarium ticket: €16 full price, €13 reduced. Free for under‑26s and first Sundays.
