An elegant painter’s home‑studio revealing the sensitive works of Jean‑Jacques Henner, in the heart of Plaine‑Monceau.
Description
Located in a 19th‑century mansion between Parc Monceau and rue de Villiers, the National Museum Jean‑Jacques Henner offers a refined and intimate immersion into the world of this notable Second Empire painter. The museum boasts nearly 3,000 works (paintings, drawings, objects, sketches), tracing key phases of his life: native Alsace, Prix de Rome (1858), Parisian artistic career, Villa Medici, and finally his life as an artist in the capital.
Housed in the former studio‑home of painter Guillaume Dubufe, the space combines a neo‑Renaissance columned salon, a luminous winter garden, and a majestic staircase. The three‑level layout unfolds around two themes: his official art career and the working studio, including the red studio, grey studio, moucharabieh partitions, sketches, furniture and personal items—creating a hushed, immersive atmosphere.
Highlights include iconic works such as “L’Alsace, elle attend,” “Fabiola,” religious paintings, portraits and allegories, along with personal documents (letters, photographs). The museum regularly hosts themed exhibitions (“Henner intime”), drawing workshops, yoga sessions, concerts, and readings that enliven the space and deepen engagement with the artist’s legacy.
The museum also offers combined tickets with Musée Gustave‑Moreau, free admission on the first Sunday of the month, evening openings until 9 pm on the second Thursday, and creative activities for all ages (children’s workshops, guided visits). Accessibility is ensured via elevator and wheelchairs available upon request. Security checks in place, photo-taking without flash allowed.
This artistic haven appeals to classical art lovers, families, students, as well as professionals seeking an exceptional venue for conferences, receptions or photo shoots—the winter garden and columned salon can host up to 70 people, or up to 100 with full venue booking.
