A leafy, friendly oasis in Montmartre, offering stunning views and a dedicated dog area.
Description
Nestled at the foot of Sacré‑Cœur, between rue Azaïs and rue Saint‑Éleuthère, Nadar Square offers a charming green oasis in Montmartre, open daily from dawn to dusk (8 AM–8:30 PM in summer). Named after Gaspard‑Félix Tournachon, known as Nadar, pioneer of aerial photography in the 19th century, who lived nearby, the square reflects his innovative spirit.
Created as a public garden in 1927, the site once served as a strategic location during the Commune – the so‑called “Champ des Polonais” for artillery placement. Today, visitors find shaded paths beneath sophoras, oaks and Judas trees, benches for resting, a pigeon house from 2007 designed to manage wildlife, and a popular fenced dog park.
The square also features a statue of the Chevalier de La Barre, a young man executed for blasphemy in 1766. The original statue from 1905 was relocated here in 1926, melted down during WWII, and replaced in 2001 by Emmanuel Ball’s work.
Accessible via Métro (Abbesses, line 12 or Anvers, line 2), the square overlooks Paris and even the Eiffel Tower. It sits just below the rue Foyatier steps and Montmartre funicular.
