Museum of Modern Art of Paris

Summary

An Art Deco gem in the heart of Paris, offering a free and essential journey through modern and contemporary art.

Description

Housed in the eastern wing of the impressive Palais de Tokyo, the Museum of Modern Art of Paris (MAM) pays vibrant tribute to Art Deco and 20th‑century creation. Designed for the 1937 International Exhibition by architects Jean‑Claude Dondel, André Aubert, Paul Viard, and Marcel Dastugue, the luminous and elegant marble‑clad venue opened in 1961.

Enriched by Maurice Girardin’s generous bequest—featuring Fauvist, Cubist and Expressionist masterpieces—and Raoul Dufy’s monumental mural “La Fée Électricité” (installed in 1964 across 600 m²), the museum today displays over 15,000 works by Picasso, Matisse, Giacometti, Klein, Delaunay and others, spanning modern to contemporary art.

Permanent collections are free, while temporary exhibitions require tickets (approx. €7–15), with free access for under‑18s, students, job seekers, people with disabilities and their companions.

Visitors enjoy quiet discovery in expansive, recently refurbished spaces by h2o Architectes, featuring open mezzanines, comfortable air‑conditioning and enhanced accessibility. Kids benefit from creative workshops and sensory visits starting from age 0.

Refreshments are available at Forest – Brasserie Soleil, overlooking the Seine and the Eiffel Tower. Practical amenities include €3 audio‑guides (FR/EN/DE), a gift shop, free cloakroom and security checks (bag limit 40×40×40 cm).
