Description

The Medici Fountain, nestled within the shaded heart of the Luxembourg Garden, is a precious relic from the era of Marie de Medici. Built around 1630 by Florentine engineer Thomas Francini to recreate the ambiance of Italian nymphaea, it was originally known as the “Grotto of Luxembourg”. Adorned with allegorical sculptures of the Seine and Rhône and topped with the Medici coat of arms, it already showcased the Baroque elegance desired by the queen.

In the 18th century, Jean‑François Chalgrin, who also renovated the Luxembourg Palace, enhanced the fountain by placing a Venus statue in the central niche. Then, in 1862, during Haussmann’s urban works and the creation of rue de Médicis, the fountain was moved stone by stone about thirty meters closer to the palace. Architect Alphonse de Gisors added a 50‑meter basin and commissioned sculptor Auguste Ottin to create the main group: Polyphemus surprising Acis and Galatea.

Today, the site is a peaceful, romantic retreat ideal for strolling, reading, or sharing intimate moments. The ambiance is contemplative, enhanced by the soft sound of flowing water and sculptural presence. The Senate, managing the garden, restored the fountain and its basins from 2020 to 2021, upgrading hydraulic systems and cleaning statues.

The Medici Fountain draws a varied crowd: students seeking quiet, solitary wanderers, history‑loving tourists, and families enjoying nearby playgrounds. Though free to visit, it helps to check seasonal opening hours (generally 7:30 AM until dusk in summer; earlier in winter) .

Fun facts: It is said the queen loved watching water displays from her palace overlooking the fountain, reminiscent of Florence’s Buontalenti Grotto. In the evening, after gates close, the fountain is softly illuminated—offering a magical view through rue de Médicis .
