An intimate and historic oasis in the heart of Le Marais, perfect for a refreshing break.
Description
The Jardin des Rosiers Joseph Migneret is a hidden gem in Paris’s Marais district, located between Rue des Rosiers and Rue des Francs‑Bourgeois. Created between 2007 and 2014, this 2 135 m² garden was formed by merging the private gardens of three hôtels particuliers – Coulanges, Barbes, and d’Albret.
It unfolds across three distinct sections. Behind the hôtel de Coulanges lies a semi-shaded lawn fringed with Provençal cane, ornamental grasses, and lilac bushes. Wooden play structures provide a leisurely spot for families to picnic, read, or relax. The second, smaller area is a serene pathway lined with a creeping fig and a chestnut tree, offering a serene pause.
The third section, located behind hôtel d’Albret, hosts a community garden, espaliered fruit trees, and a restored vestige of the medieval Phillippe-Auguste city wall, once used as a summer dining room or chapel. Nearby stands the chimney of the former “Société des Cendres,” a relic of the industrial era dedicated to extracting precious metals – now seamlessly woven into the urban fabric.
The garden honors Joseph Migneret (1888‑1949), former headmaster at Hospitalières‑Saint‑Gervais school, who saved hundreds of Jewish children from deportation during World War II. He was posthumously named “Righteous Among the Nations.” A memorial stele by AMEJD honors the child victims of the Holocaust.
The atmosphere is one of peaceful contemplation, disturbed only occasionally by children's laughter or birdsong. Visitors tend to be locals seeking calm, history buffs, and lovers of secret urban gardens.
