Hunting and Nature Museum

Summary

A contemporary cabinet of curiosities set in two historic mansions, blending art, nature and emotion.

Description

Nestled in two splendid private mansions in Paris’s historic Marais district, the Hunting and Nature Museum offers an immersive experience spanning the 17ᵗʰ to the 21ˢᵗ centuries. Founded in 1967 by François and Jacqueline Sommer and inaugurated by André Malraux, this private, Musée de France–accredited museum explores the intricate relationship between humans and animals, blending hunting art, classical works, contemporary installations, armor, weaponry, and taxidermy.

The architecture itself feels like a journey: the Hôtel de Guénégaud, a masterpiece by François Mansart, now converses with the elegant Hôtel de Mongelas—added in 2007, adding 250 m² and six new thematic rooms. Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a taxidermy boar and gray wolf, setting the tone for the enriched scenography shaped by contemporary artists.

The visit unfolds in stages:

On the ground floor, a collector’s home atmosphere reveals tapestries, paintings (Cranach, Brueghel, Chardin…), sculptures, weapons, and ceramics.

Upstairs, a chronological journey traces the evolving status of animals from Antiquity to the present, enhanced by installations, photography, and video.

The museum also hosts 3–4 free temporary exhibitions yearly, offering contemporary or historical insight.

The ambiance is a captivating fusion: cozy salons, luminous glass roofs, and baroque undertones invite deep reflection on human-wildlife coexistence. This living cabinet of curiosities is perfect for solo visitors, friends, or families seeking offbeat cultural experiences.
