Hôtel des Invalides – Army Museum & Dome Church

Summary

Delve into France’s military history and discover Napoleon’s tomb beneath the majestic golden dome.

Description

Built between 1671 and 1676 under Louis XIV, the Hôtel des Invalides was designed as a hospice for wounded soldiers, combining Baroque architecture with royal grandeur. Beneath the iconic dome – crafted by Hardouin‑Mansart – lies Napoleon I, in a magnificent red porphyry sarcophagus, installed in 1861.

Today, the complex hosts the Army Museum – France’s largest military museum – with nearly 500,000 items spanning from Antiquity to modern conflicts . It also includes the Order of Liberation Museum, the Relief Maps, and the Charles de Gaulle Historial, bringing history to life.

Upon arrival, the Cour d’Honneur impresses with its solemnity and ongoing military ceremonies. Adjacent to the dome, the Saint‑Louis Cathedral captivates with its sculpted trophies, 17th‑century organ, and role as cathedral to the French armed forces .

Visitors may enjoy classical and jazz concerts, lectures, and monthly evening openings on the first Friday, adding a rich cultural dimension. A commemorative mass on 5 May honors Napoleon, and another in September marks the site's founding.

Explore exhibits of arms, uniforms, models, and admire the golden dome, restored in 1989. With accessible grounds ideal for picnics, easy transport links (metro, RER), and full accessibility, it welcomes families, history buffs, architecture lovers, and those drawn to remembrance.
