Bourdelle Museum – Sculptor Antoine Bourdelle’s Atelier

Summary

An intimate sculptor’s studio‑museum where art and nature intertwine in Antoine Bourdelle’s footsteps.

Description

Located in sculptor Antoine Bourdelle’s former workshop, this museum offers an authentic immersion into the daily life of a major artist of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. From 1885 until his death in 1929, Bourdelle created here, working in luminous ateliers surrounded by a peaceful interior garden. Today, exploring the exhibition rooms means walking through original creative spaces, from models to plasters and bronzes.

The museum preserves the spirit of this unique site: each workshop has been maintained in its original state, with skylights, tools, and the scent of beeswax – the atmosphere feels consecrated. Visitors can also access drawings, photographs, and archival materials illustrating Bourdelle’s life and role as an instructor, having taught students such as Giacometti and Matisse.

The outdoor areas feature two gardens: an intimate interior garden shaded by sculpted shrubs and statues, and a street-facing garden with sculptures like Penelope and the Alvear Horse, set along poetic paths. Seasonal floral arrangements echo the artist's original planting choices .

Cultural programming ranges from molding workshops to guided tours, panel discussions, and family-friendly events focused on artistic techniques and garden exploration
Bourdelle.

Since its 2023 renovation, the museum includes a café‑restaurant (“Le Rhodia”), open until 5:30 pm. Located in former ateliers, it serves breakfast, lunch, and early‑evening gatherings in an artistic, serene setting.

Practical info: open Tuesday–Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm (extended hours on Fridays), closed Mondays and major holidays (Jan 1, May 1, Dec 25). Last admission around 5:40 pm for permanent collections and 5:15 pm for temporary exhibitions. Allow at least 90 minutes to fully explore the museum and gardens. Bags are checked per security measures; lockers are external.

The museum appeals to art lovers, students, and families seeking calm and inspiration. Art historians, Montparnasse bohemians, and contemporary sculpture aficionados will find this space engaging and rejuvenating. A noteworthy anecdote: Bourdelle requested his workshop remain unchanged, which is why floors, partitions, and lighting remain faithful to the original layout.
