Auteuil Greenhouses Garden

Summary

A free botanical haven blending historic glasshouse architecture and exotic flora in the heart of Paris.

Description

The Jardin des Serres d’Auteuil is a botanical gem on the edge of Bois de Boulogne, designed by Jean‑Camille Formigé between 1895 and 1898. Designated as a “Remarkable Garden” and listed as a historic monument, it immerses visitors in a tropical setting featuring palms, ferns, orchids, cacti and rare trees like ginkgo biloba, cork oak and catalpa.

Centered around a formal French parterre, the site is dominated by five grand blue‑green iron‑framed greenhouses. The main glasshouse (palmarium) is divided into three climatic zones: a hot tropical garden, a drier palm section and a milder orangery, complete with koi ponds and a small aviary.

In 2019, six contemporary greenhouses opened near Roland‑Garros stadium’s Simonne‑Mathieu court, recreating ecosystems from Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia and South America. These feature sensory workshops, including scent stations and African storytelling around a dialogue-trunk.

The garden traces its roots to a 1761 botanical garden commissioned by Louis XV. After years of neglect, it was reborn in 1898 when the city merged the old municipal florist. In 1968, a third of the site was lost for the ring road.

Today it's a sensory stroll combining Art Nouveau architecture, Dalou’s fountain, Rodin’s mascarons, exotic birds, koi carp and lush greenery. The tranquil atmosphere attracts families, couples, botany lovers, or anyone seeking calm.

Free guided visits take place every Sunday and public holiday (April–September), alongside educational workshops. A free mobile app offers an audio guide in French and English, designed for the visually impaired.

Practical info: open from 8 AM (9 AM on weekends/holidays), closing between 5 PM and 8 PM depending on season. Greenhouses close earlier (4 PM weekdays, 4:45 PM weekends). The site is free, accessible via metro (line 10 – Porte d’Auteuil or Michel‑Ange Molitor), bus (52, 123, 241, PC1), and has nearby parking.
