Dive into the heart of Paris at this cultural gem combining high-tech architecture, Arab exhibitions, library, and breathtaking rooftop terrace.
Description
Opened in 1987 on the left bank of the Seine, the Arab World Institute (IMA) is a vivid emblem of cultural exchange between France and the Arab world. Designed by Jean Nouvel and Architecture-Studio, its sleek façade of photo-sensitive metal diaphragms reinterprets the traditional moucharabieh.
The IMA houses a museum showcasing bronzes, ceramics, textiles, scientific instruments across several floors, a 350-seat auditorium, a library-media centre, and a freely accessible bookshop. Its library ranks among Europe’s most comprehensive on Arab culture.
On the 9th floor, the rooftop restaurant Dar Mima‑Ziryab and terrace offer breathtaking views of Notre-Dame, the Seine, and Parisian rooftops—ideal for lunch, dinner, or afternoon tea.
The institute hosts temporary exhibits, concerts, lectures, workshops (calligraphy, tactile visits), guided tours (FR/EN/AR), nighttime openings, children’s activities, and inclusive programmes for disabled visitors.
Located near Jussieu (metro 7‑10), Cardinal‑Lemoine (10), and Sully‑Morland (7) stations, or buses 24/63/67/86/87/89, the IMA is fully wheelchair accessible with audio-description services.
Target audience includes families, students, professionals, and international culture enthusiasts. Visitors are drawn to its immersive exhibits and spectacular views.
Trivia: Often dubbed the “Arab Beaubourg”, the IMA saw visitation exceed 600,000 in 2022 and actively hosts civic events—such as a gathering celebrating France’s multicultural fabric in the face of rising far-right sentiment.
